Scientific Name: Serenoa repens

Common Names: Saw Palmetto, Serrated Sabal Palm

Overview: Elevate your garden’s texture and color with the Serenoa repens, commonly known as the Saw Palmetto. This versatile and hardy palm is native to the southeastern United States and thrives in a variety of conditions, making it a favorite among both beginners and experienced gardeners. Characterized by its fan-shaped, sharp-toothed fronds that spread out in a dense, low-growing rosette, this palm can reach up to 2-7 feet in height and width. The fronds’ rich green to bluish-green hue provides a stunning contrast in sunny to partially shaded landscapes. Adaptable to both dry and moist soils, the Saw Palmetto is drought-resistant once established, requiring minimal care. Its resilience and attractive form make it an excellent choice for ground cover, natural barriers, or as a striking container plant.

Description

THIS MAINTENANCE-FREE PALM CONJURES UP OLD FLORIDA CHARM

The Saw Palmetto or Serenoa Repens is native to Florida and the Southeastern U.S. You see it growing naturally in southern oak hammocks, pine forests and open fields. Landscapers love it as a filler, hedge, backdrop or accent. This unique palm grows wide, and often in a grouping.

The “saw” in its name refers to saw-like teeth on its leaf stems. But, not to worry, the plant rarely needs pruning.  It’s absolutely fuss-free about the cold, and it’s both drought and salt tolerant. Place it in full sun or full shade.

An extract from the saw palmetto has been used for hundreds of years by everyone from the Mayans to the Seminoles. Currently, saw palmetto extract is hailed as an alternative medicine for prostate issues, though there is not strong medical evidence to support this.
