The Best Snake Plant for Neglect
The Sansevieria Zeylanica is a very hardy snake plant. It grows in zones 9 – 11 and thrives best in full sun, requiring less water than some other plants. It’s native to regions of Africa, Madagascar and Southern Asia and this subtropical plant does well both as a houseplant and in your own outdoor landscaping.
The Sansevieria Zeylanica’s leaves are what really make this plant unique, as they are very thick and stiff, often with yellow edging or white spots throughout. Growing up to 42 inches in height, they sometimes (though rarely outside of their native habitat) produce green and white flowers in large clusters.
Commonly known as Viper’s bowstring hemp, Snake Plant, Devil’s Tongue or Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, these plants can handle lower light levels and can even handle dry soil or bad quality soil. The viper’s bowstring hemp actually thrive on neglect. To get the best out of them, however, you’ll want to make sure the soil is well drained and that you fertilize them just a little. Make sure not to over-water your Sansevieria Zeylanica, as over-watering is worse than under-watering.
Make sure that you keep the Sansevieria Zeylanica’s leaves away from your pets and small children as they can be toxic if ingested. If you want to grow more or give some away you can divide the plant you have and create more easily.
