Description

Caring for your Rue (Ruda)

Light

This plant thrives in full sun, requiring at least 6 hours of direct light daily to maintain its dense and colorful foliage. While it can tolerate light shade, it may become leggy and less vibrant without sufficient sun exposure.

Soil

Rue is highly adaptable and can grow in poor, rocky, or sandy soils, making it perfect for low-maintenance areas. However, excellent drainage is mandatory as it does not tolerate heavy, clay-rich, or waterlogged environments that can damage the root system.

Water

Once established, Rue is exceptionally drought-tolerant and requires minimal intervention. You should water regularly during the first few weeks to help the root system settle, then allow the soil to dry out significantly between waterings to mimic its natural dry habitat.

Fertilizer

Rue does not require heavy feeding and often performs better in less fertile soil. A light application of balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is sufficient to sustain its growth through the season.

Common Issues

The plant contains natural oils that can cause skin irritation, known as phototoxicity, in some individuals when touched in direct sunlight. It is highly recommended to wear gloves when pruning or handling the plant to avoid any reaction.

Pests

It is generally pest-resistant due to its strong scent, which naturally deters many insects, though it serves as a host plant for the Giant Swallowtail butterfly. If you see large caterpillars, they are likely future butterflies.

Disease

The plant is susceptible to root rot if kept in overly damp conditions or poorly drained soil. Ensure good air circulation and avoid overwatering to prevent fungal issues from developing.

Pruning

Pruning should be done in early spring to encourage fresh and bushy growth for the upcoming season. You can also trim the plant throughout the year to maintain its shape or to remove spent flower stalks.

Potting / Repotting

Rue performs well in containers as long as they have adequate drainage holes. Use a well-draining potting mix, such as one designed for cacti or Mediterranean herbs, to ensure the health of the roots.
