Caring for your Pilea Creeping Charlie
Pilea nummulariifolia, known as Creeping Charlie Pilea, is a delightful tropical evergreen in the family Urticaceae native to the Caribbean and northern South America. Easy to grow and quick to spread, this compact trailing plant thrives indoors or in shaded outdoor spots, bringing rich texture and bright green foliage wherever it trails.
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light to medium shade. Protect its soft, tender leaves from harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can easily scorch the delicate quilted foliage and cause leaf browning.
Soil
Prefers a light, rich, and well-draining potting mix. A combination of quality potting soil, peat moss, and perlite works best to retain necessary moisture while allowing excess water to drain freely.
Water
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. Water thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels slightly dry to the touch. Avoid letting the soil dry out completely for long periods, as its delicate foliage will wilt quickly. Reduce watering slightly in winter.
Fertilizing
Feed monthly during the active growing season (spring and summer) using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Suspend or drastically reduce feeding during late fall and winter.
Pruning and Maintenance
Pinch back vine tips regularly to encourage bushier, denser growth and prevent stems from becoming leggy. Stem cuttings root extremely easily in water or moist soil for propagation. Trim away any yellowing or damaged leaves at the base to maintain a clean appearance.
