Scientific Name: Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Yellow Flame’

Common Names: Yellow Flame Pinnatum, Golden Flame Dragon, Variegated Yellow Pinnatum

Overview: Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Yellow Flame’ is a rare and striking climbing aroid highly prized for its electric neon-yellow, golden, and lime-green variegated foliage. As this fast-growing vine matures and climbs upward on a moss pole, its narrow, elongated leaves expand significantly and develop deep fenestrations (splits), creating a bold, fiery tropical statement piece.

Description

Caring for your Epipremnum Pinnatum Yellow Flame

Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Yellow Flame’ is a tropical vining epiphyte in the family Araceae, native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands. Renowned for its warm, fiery yellow variegation and dramatic leaf transformation upon climbing, this sought-after collector’s plant requires strong ambient light, airy soil, and vertical support to achieve its full potential with large, split foliage.

Light

Thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong, filtered light is essential to sustain its intense golden-yellow variegation and prevent the leaves from reverting to solid green. Protect the foliage from harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which will quickly burn the bright yellow sectors.

Soil

Requires a chunky, airy, and well-draining aroid substrate. Combine coarse orchid bark, perlite or pumice, coconut coir chips, and a small amount of quality potting soil. High aeration around the root system is critical to allow rapid drainage and prevent root rot.

Water

Allow the top 2 to 3 inches of the soil mix to dry out completely between waterings. Water thoroughly until liquid drains freely from the bottom of the pot. Reduce watering frequency during late fall and winter when the plant enters a slower growth phase.

Fertilizing

Feed every 3 to 4 weeks during the active spring and summer growing season using a balanced, liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength. Pause fertilizing during late fall and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Providing a sturdy moss pole, coir totem, or wooden plank is strongly recommended. As aerial roots grip the support, the foliage will rapidly size up and fenestrate. Prune as needed to manage vine length, encourage bushier growth at the base, or harvest stem cuttings for propagation. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth to keep them free of dust.

Pest and Disease Management

Watch for common houseplant pests like thrips, spider mites, scale, and mealybugs. Treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Root rot and browning of the variegated yellow tissue are typically caused by overwatering or compacted soil—ensure proper drainage and allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings.
