Scientific Name: Licuala Grandis

Common Names: Ruffled Fan Palm, Licuala Palm, Grand Licuala

Overview: The Licuala Grandis, or Licuala Palm is a true stand-out with its glossy, pleated, fan-like fronds. Native to the humid rainforests of Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands, the palm puts out a drooping cluster of fruits that mature late in the season. Many gardeners cluster Licualas beneath a tall shade tree for a visually pleasing look. Indoors, the palm can be a dramatic accent. Make sure to place it where it can benefit from bright light and warmth.

The Licuala prefers partial shade or dappled sun when young. It will not thrive with constant wind exposure. Older specimens can take more sun if humidity is high and summer temperatures are not too scorching. Soil should be fast draining. Water regularly to ensure soil remains evenly moist.

Description

A Distinctive and Elegant Palm that makes a Grand Statement

The Licuala Grandis is one of the most elegant pants. It is a slow-growing plant, and a great option to grow indoors. The plant is native to the Solomon and Vanuatu Islands, near Australia’s coast. This plant can grow up to 15’ and if you keep it in a container, it can grow up between 6′ and 10′. The leaves of the Ruffled Fan Palm are large and seemingly very beautiful.

Caring for your Ruffled Fan Palm

The plant has a wild personality, and when taking care of it, there are several things you must consider, such as the amount of water you should give it or how much light is enough for the plant to grow to its full potential. Let’s dive into all the care perimeters you should consider.

Light

These plants flourish when kept indoors, as they need bright but indirect light. You can keep them near a south or north-facing window, ensuring they get all the light they need. These plants usually grow in the light direction, so you must be very careful when keeping them indoors. The plant does not tolerate full sunlight, so you should not keep it outdoors.

Soil

The Licuala Palm is not very picky regarding the type of soil. However, for the best results, you can use sandy soil and add a lot of humus. Your second-best option should be clay or loam soil. Do not worry about the pH levels of the soil; it can be neutral, acidic, or alkaline. Just ensure the soil is draining well so the roots do not sit in the water for a long time.

Water

You do not need to water the plant very frequently; it does not need a lot of water. Before you water it, check the soil to see if the plotting mix has dried out. If the soil is dry, then you must water it. However, it is best to avoid over-watering it.

During the winter, the plant’s growth stunts, and at this time, you need to hold back on watering the plant, as it does not need a lot of water when it is not growing.

Fertilizer

On the surface, these plants do not need a lot of fertilizer, but if you feed them some fertilizer, that will help with their growth. For the best results, use a slow-release fertilizer. You can add this once or twice during the growing season. During the winter, the Ruffled Fan Palm does not need fertilizers, as there is no significant growth during that time. If you overuse fertilizers, you can cause the plant to suffer fertilizer burn.

Common Issues

The Licuala Grandis is easy to keep, but like all plants, some issues can pose a problem. You should recognize these problems and deal with them accordingly.

Pests

These plants are fairly resistant to pests, but they may still be damaged by pests that affect all the houseplants. You need to take the right protocol to avoid the infestation of pests. You can use pesticides or organic ways to ward off all pests.

Disease

These plants can be sensitive to sudden changes, overwatering, and fertilizer burn. Try to ensure that you provide everything in moderation, so you do not shock your plants. If you overwater them, the plant’s roots can rot, and that would cause significant damage to the overall plant.

Furthermore, when adding fertilizer to the soil, the best way would be to go with a slow-release fertilizer, so it does not shock the plant.

Pruning

You can prune the plant if you want to make sure that you keep its shape. Other than that, there is no evident need for you to prune it regularly. It has a typically slow growth, so pruning is not necessary.

Propagation

To propagate the plant, you have to take suckers from the plant and then repot it. The care for the new plant is similar to the care you would give a mature plant. You can also propagate the plant using the seeds. However, it may take a long time for the seeds to germinate.

Potting/Repotting

If you want to repot the plant, you need to be very careful of the root system, so the repotting helps boost growth. When repotting the plant, it is a great idea to replace the old potting mix and replace it with the new one. Other than that, the plant has a slow growth, so you don’t have to worry about repotting it every now and then.

I am amazed at how beautiful my little palm is! A two-day journey to get here turned into ten, as the package got temporarily lost at a FedEx facility en route. I was afraid it would be half dead when I opened the box, but it was glossy, green, and gorgeous! The soil was not bone dry, either — a testament to Plant one’s careful packaging. It is a lovely and elegant addition to my home.

  17. Anonymous (verified owner)

Love it. It’s a healthy little plant. However the soil wasn’t sealed good and most of it was loose in the box when it arrived.
