A Compact Evergreen That Grows Into a Graceful Tree or Shrub

The Eugenia Confusa is an evergreen canopy tree you may know as the Redberry Stopper. Wondering about the name? Though unproven, some believe Native Americans and early settlers ate the fruit to combat intestinal distress. Another theory is that when pruned as a shrub, it presented a physical barrier, or “stopper.” While we’ll never be certain, you can be sure this attractive, trouble-free native is a beautiful choice for small spaces. It’s even been honored by being named as one of the American Forests Champion Trees.

This slow grower eventually reaches a height of 20 ft. The Redberry Stopper blooms most heavily in spring and summer, producing small white or cream-colored flowers. It also gives off a wonderfully musky scent. Its new leaves emerge as reddish, then turn to green upon maturity. Its small round berries naturally attract birds. The Eugenia Confusa loves full to partial sun, a moderate amount of water, and well-draining soil. Once established, you’ll find it drought resistant.
