Description

This Ancient Grass is a Visually Pleasing Choice for Narrow Planting Spots

The Horsetail Reed is actually considered a living fossil, having been on the planet for 300 million years. Related to a fern, smart landscapers often use it between walkways or along fences, pools or contained ponds. Its slender stems are hollow and jointed, similar to bamboo. A clump of stems together creates the bushy look that’s the inspiration for its name – Horsetail. It is a very popular element in Asian-style or Modernist garden design, as its upright look adds visual interest.

Horsetail Reeds grow in wide range of conditions, in moist sandy or clay soil with some shade. Though individual stalks are slow-growing, this plant spreads rapidly. You may want to grow it in large pots, to curb its tendency for taking over a landscape.
