Description

A Showy Shower of Purple Flowers

The Duranta Erecta is a flowering shrub that grows in zones 10 and 11. Also known as Sapphire Showers, Pigeon Berry, Skyflower, or Golden Dewdrop, the Duranta Erecta is native to the tropical regions of America, South America, the Caribbean, and Mexico.

Because of the Sapphire Showers cultivation in various areas of the world, it’s actually become invasive in regions of Australia, South Africa and China as well as some of the Pacific Islands. It is a unique plant that thrives well outdoors as either a tree or within its bushy form. The Duranta Erecta ‘Sapphire Showers’ is also known to attract bees and butterflies.

Best grown  in full sun and with regular watering, the Duranta Erecta ‘Sapphire Showers,’ produces light blue, violet and white flowers seasonally that are small and definitely a pretty accent. The unique flowers are where the Sapphire Showers name comes from. On the other hand, It’s the fruit produced, that give it the other common name of Golden Dewdrop.

The fruits of the skyflower are orange or yellow in color and are highly toxic, as are the leaves. This is why it’s important to keep the plant away from pets as well as small children. You may also find needles and spines on some of the older plants though they don’t seem to appear on younger plants.

Everything looks good so far! Got my skyflower golden dewdrop Duranta tree today. Aside from the fedex man throwing it on its side when it said “this side up” lol, I think it weathered the trip nicely. These trees are so hard to find in NJ because they’re tropical. Happy with it so far. Ordered 4/9, shipped 4/20, arrived 4/23, within the 10 business days window 🙂 These are great trees that butterflies, bumblebees, and hummingbirds really like. Just be sure to bring it in if it gets too cold in your region. I’m so happy I was able to find this tree! Be careful, it can be poisonous to animals.

Why others chose the Duranta erecta ‘Sapphire Showers’, Golden Dewdrop, Duranta Repens, Pigeon Berry, Skyflower

Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies. Great fragrance. Previous one died during deep freeze in TX this year

I can't find duranta trees anywhere in my area. Wonderful selection!!

Duranta is slightly fragrant and attacts hummingbirds and bumblebees. Have enjoyed it for years.

Beautiful all summer long, attracts lots of butterflies

Bought one locally and wanted 2 more, none were to be found locally.

The humming birds love this plant!!

Beautiful plant, very difficult to locate.

Great for pollinators

As a memorial gift.

This is perhaps one of the most beautiful plants I’ve ever had in my container garden, profuse tiny deep purple and white flowers show all summer. The plant attracts butterflies and birds too. It’s very hard to get though so I was thrilled when I found them here 😁

Got something to discuss?

can the tree be pruned, when?

Hi- Pruning the duranta should be done in late winter to early spring before new growth emerges at the tips, as this helps promote new growth to the plant.

I have wintered my tree. Now greens are sprouting from the trunk? Should these be removed?

Hi Karen, if where the new greens are sprouting you do now want them to grow, you can simply remove them.

If not in a tropical zone, how do you keep the size to a container that can be moved indoors to overwinter? It may get to 12’-24’ tall and 4-6’ in diameter!!

Hi Jana,

This particular tree does do well when planted in a tropical setting. However, you can definitely plant this particular beauty in a container for warm season use & simply bring it indoors when the cold season arrives. Growing any plant in a container will force the plant to grow slower and not grow as tall as quickly, which means you should be able to enjoy this particular tree for many seasons to come!

I would like to plant this in my back yard, but this is also where my dogs hang out when I let them out. Should I be worried? I’m more worried about the fruit it gives off. Does the fruit fall to the ground? If they do, is it a lot of them that end up on the ground? My dogs do not stay out by themselvs a lot – but sometimes in the summer I might leave them unattended for like 10-15 minutes. This is the reason I have not yet planted the tree.

Hi Sylvia, this particular tree only produces small seeds that grow in clusters. Once the seeds dry up they typically fall, however if you want to avoid them falling, you can simply prune the clusters of seeds off.

I got two of these beautiful topiaries. They wintered beautifully in the house, then in early spring i cut them back. They are growling very happily but are not blooming, even tho I’ve given them two feedings of Miracle Grow bloom buster. They have their usual gorgeous green foliage but they just aren’t blooming. Can you suggest something I haven’t thought of to help them bloom again?
