Scientific Name: Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’

Common Names: Davana Fern, Ruffled Blue Star Fern, Davana Blue Star Fern

Overview: Phlebodium aureum ‘Davana’ is a captivating and distinct variety of epiphytic fern, renowned for its highly ruffled, scalloped fronds and unique glaucous blue-green color. Originating from the tropical and subtropical forests of the Americas, this cultivar stands out with its exceptionally wavy texture and golden, furry creeping rhizomes. The dusty-blue blossoms contrast beautifully against traditional dark green houseplants, making it a striking addition to any modern indoor space. The Davana Fern is perfect for bright bathrooms, kitchens, or elevated plant stands where its voluminous, cascading shape can be fully displayed. Regular watering, bright indirect light, and a chunky potting mix will keep this lush tropical treasure healthy and prolific.

Description

Caring for your Davana Fern

With the right environment, the Davana Fern is surprisingly resilient and easier to care for than many traditional ferns. Paying attention to its preference for bright indirect light, consistent moisture, and an airy soil mix will reward you with a massive explosion of ruffled, dusty-blue fronds. Whether you are adding to your rare fern collection or looking for a low-maintenance statement piece, the Davana Fern delivers maximum visual impact for your efforts.

Light

Davana Ferns thrive in medium to bright, indirect sunlight. Unlike many delicate green ferns, their unique blue-grey coating helps them handle brighter conditions, which actually keeps their ruffled color vibrant. However, they must be protected from harsh, direct afternoon sun, which will quickly scorch and bleach their scalloped leaves. An east- or north-facing window provides the ideal lighting balance.

Soil

The right soil mixture is key to accommodating the Davana Fern’s epiphytic nature. In the wild, their relatives grow on trees rather than in heavy mud, so they require a highly porous, loose, and well-draining medium. A premium mix blend of potting soil, peat moss, perlite, and a generous handful of orchid bark creates the perfect balance of moisture retention and root aeration.

Water

Consistent moisture is crucial, but the Davana Fern prefers its soil to be evenly damp rather than waterlogged. Water your fern thoroughly as soon as the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. Avoid pouring water directly into the center of the plant’s crown, as this can trap moisture against the furry rhizomes and cause rot; instead, water around the edges of the pot. Reduce watering slightly in the winter when growth naturally slows down.

While more tolerant of average home humidity than other ferns, the Davana Fern truly flourishes in higher humidity (50% or above). Running a humidifier nearby or placing it in a naturally humid room like a bright bathroom will keep the ruffled leaf tips perfectly crisp and healthy.

Fertilizing

Feed your Davana Fern gently during the active spring and summer growing months. Use a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength once every four to six weeks. This gives the plant the necessary nutrients to push out its signature large, wavy fronds without overwhelming its root system. Hold off on fertilizing completely during the fall and winter.

Pruning and Maintenance

Pruning a Davana Fern is a simple task to keep the plant looking pristine and full. As the fern grows, older fronds near the base will naturally turn yellow or brown; simply use a pair of clean, sterilized scissors to snip them off near the rhizome. Do not bury the fuzzy, gold-colored rhizomes crawling along the soil surface, as these are vital to the plant’s health and shouldn’t be covered by soil or debris.

Pest and Disease Management

Davana Ferns are generally hardy but can occasionally encounter common indoor pests like scale, mealybugs, or spider mites if the air is too dry. Inspect the undersides of the ruffled leaves regularly and treat infestations early with a gentle insecticidal soap or neem oil. Prevent root rot by always ensuring your pot has excellent drainage holes and never letting the soil sit in stagnant water.

Propagation

The Davana Fern propagates beautifully through rhizome division during the spring repotting season. As the plant matures, its golden, furry creeping rhizomes will spread across the pot, creating new clusters of leaves. Carefully slide the fern out of its pot and use a clean, sharp knife to cut a section of the rhizome that has at least two or three healthy fronds and a well-established root system. Pot the new division into a fresh, airy mix.
