Description

A Distinct Palm with an Older Look

The Coccothrinax Crinita is a unique looking palm plant actually grows well in flooded areas and is native to Cuba. The trunk is covered in what appear to be hairs and though the stem is actually only 3 – 8 inches it appears much larger because of those hairs all over the trunk. The hairs resembling that of an โ€œold man,โ€ are the reason that this slow growing palm is named that of the Old Man Palm.

Grown best in zones 9 – 11, this plant is also known as Old Man Palm, Thatch Palm and Palma Petate. It does best in full sun to partial shade and requires standard water, never allowing the soil to get too dry but also making sure that it doesnโ€™t sit in too much standing water that can cause it to rot.

This low maintenance shrub is extremely slow growing, but over time it will get all the way up to 20 feet. Throughout the summer you can see beautiful yellow blooms that make it a great ornamental plant in many different areas. It also produces deep purple fruits.

If youโ€™re looking for a palm that can last indoors or outdoors this is a great option and even works well in colder areas. The old man palm is great for landscaping areas and highly salt tolerant, it does best with fertilizer at least twice during the primary growing season.

For those who want to propagate their own, the Coccothrinax Crinita can be best propagated by seed and though it takes a while to grow will do quite well through this method of planting.
