Scientific name: Asclepias sp.

Common Names: Milkweed, Butterfly Flower

Overview: The Milkweed looks beautifully at home in native-style gardens and among wildflowers. You’ll find it works well in borders of perennials, as it comes back each year. Its bright orange umbrella-like flowers are surrounded by green leaves.

Named for the milky fluid which flows forth when the plant is broken apart, you’ll want to make sure to keep pets away, as it can be harmful to them. However, Milkweed is sure to attract monarch butterflies to your garden – and isn’t that an incredibly welcome addition!

  • Please note that these plants may be treated with insecticide so allow 2-3 weeks before purposefully introducing caterpillars.

Description

A GREAT HEDGE THAT ATTRACTS BUTTERFLIES, BEES & BIRDS

Milkweeds are a group of plants belonging to the genus Asclepias, which contains over 100 species. These plants are known for their importance as a host plant for the Monarch butterfly, as well as for their beautiful flowers and hardy nature.

Milkweeds can vary in size, depending on the species. Some, like the Common Milkweed, can grow up to six feet tall and spread widely through underground rhizomes, while others, such as the Butterfly Weed, are more compact, reaching only 2-3 feet in height. Be sure to account for the mature size of the milkweed species you choose when planning your garden layout.

Caring for your Milkweed

While some species may have specific care requirements, this guide will provide a general overview of how to successfully grow and maintain milkweed plants in your garden.

Light

Most milkweed species require full sun to grow and flower at their best, so choose a planting location that receives at least six hours of direct sunlight daily.

Soil

Milkweeds are generally adaptable to a range of soil types, from sandy to clayey. However, they generally prefer well-draining soils. Some species, like the Swamp Milkweed, can tolerate wetter soils, while others, such as the Butterfly Weed, prefer drier, even rocky soils. Milkweeds can tolerate a wide range of soil pH levels, but they generally prefer slightly acidic to neutral soils, with a pH of 6.0 to 7.0.
