Description

Caring for your Chenille Plant

The Chenille Plant (Acalypha hispida), also known as the  Fox Tail, is a stunning tropical plant renowned for its vibrant, fuzzy red flowers that resemble chenille yarn. Native to the South Pacific, this plant brings a tropical flair to any garden or indoor space with its eye-catching blooms and lush green foliage. It is a versatile plant that can be grown in containers, hanging baskets, or garden beds, and with proper care, it can provide a dazzling display of color throughout the year.

Light

Chenille Plants thrive in bright, indirect light. While they can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much can scorch the leaves and flowers. Ideally, place them in a spot where they receive filtered sunlight or morning sun with afternoon shade. If grown indoors, a south or east-facing window is perfect for providing the necessary light.

Soil

The Chenille Plant thrives in well-draining soil that is rich in organic matter. A high-quality potting mix with added compost or peat moss is ideal. Ensure the soil retains some moisture but allows excess water to drain away to prevent root rot.

Watering

Consistent watering is essential for the health of Chenille Plants. Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water the plant when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. During the growing season (spring and summer), regular watering is crucial, whereas in the dormant period (fall and winter), reduce the frequency but ensure the soil does not dry out completely. Always use room-temperature water to avoid shocking the roots.

High humidity levels are also crucial for this plant’s health. In dry indoor environments, increase humidity by misting the plant regularly, placing it on a humidity tray, or using a humidifier.

Fertilizing

Chenille Plants benefit from regular feeding during the growing season. Use a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) every two to four weeks from spring through summer. Reduce feeding in the fall and stop fertilizing in the winter when the plant is not actively growing. Over-fertilizing can lead to salt build-up in the soil, so it’s important to follow the recommended dosage and flush the soil occasionally to remove excess salts.

Pruning and Maintenance

Regular pruning helps maintain the plant’s shape and encourages more vigorous growth and flowering. Pinch back the tips of the stems to promote a bushier appearance. Remove any dead, damaged, or yellowing leaves to keep the plant healthy and attractive. If the plant becomes too leggy, more extensive pruning can be done in the spring to rejuvenate growth. Prune spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming and prevent the plant from becoming too heavy.

Pest and Disease Control

Chenille Plants are generally resistant to pests and diseases, but they can occasionally be affected by common issues such as aphids, spider mites, and whiteflies. Regularly inspect the plant for signs of infestation. If pests are detected, treat the plant with insecticidal soap or neem oil. Ensure good air circulation around the plant to prevent fungal diseases like powdery mildew. Avoid overhead watering to reduce the risk of fungal infections.

As first, I found the pricing a little “spicy”. Once the plant arrived, I fell in love with PlantVine. BEAUTIFUL full plant. It’s taken it a few days to recover from its long and hot journey…but it’s specimen worthy and happy now. I will DEFINITELY be using them again.

  6. Janet (verified owner)

Beautiful healthy as described plant! Reasonable price given the maturity of the plant. Sure, I could have gotten one at half the price from another on line vendor, but it would have been a stick with a leaf! The plant was packed nicely too! I will definitely be back.
