Description

Caring for your Calathea Misto

With its paintbrush-like foliage featuring soft minty green centers framed by deep green borders, Calathea Misto brings an effortless artistic flair to any room. Providing it with bright, indirect light, consistent humidity, and filtered water will reward you with lush, moving foliage that folds up at night. Perfect for indoor tables or plant stands, this non-toxic tropical stunner adds fresh color and personality to your space.

Light

Calathea Misto thrives in medium to bright, indirect sunlight. Keep it away from direct sun, which can easily scorch its delicate leaves and wash out its vibrant variegated patterns. While it tolerates lower light, bright indirect conditions promote the healthiest foliage.

Soil

A rich, airy, and well-draining soil mix is essential. Combine standard potting soil with peat moss, perlite, and a splash of orchid bark to retain consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged or compacting around the roots.

Water

Keep the soil consistently moist, but never soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch. Calatheas are sensitive to chlorine and minerals in tap water, so using filtered, distilled, or rainwater is best to prevent crispy leaf tips.

Humidity & Temperature

This plant loves high humidity and warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Maintain humidity levels above 50% using a humidifier or pebble tray to keep the foliage pristine. Protect it from cold drafts, air conditioners, and heating vents.

Fertilizing

Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength. Hold off on fertilizing during fall and winter when the plant’s growth naturally slows down.

Pruning and Maintenance

Pruning is minimal. Simply use clean, sharp shears to snip off any yellowing or crisp brown leaves at the base of the stem to keep the plant looking fresh and direct energy toward healthy new growth.

Pest and Disease Management

Calatheas can be susceptible to spider mites—especially in dry indoor air—as well as mealybugs. Wipe the broad leaves periodically with a damp cloth to remove dust and treat any pest issues early with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Propagation

Calathea Misto is propagated by root division during repotting in spring. Gently separate the root ball into smaller clusters, ensuring each division has a healthy root system and several stems, then plant into fresh, moist potting mix.
