Description
Caring for your Wadelia
Light
For the best flowering and densest foliage, Wedelia prefers full sun (at least 6 hours). It can tolerate partial shade, but growth will be leggier and flower production will decrease.
Soil
An incredibly adaptable plant that thrives in almost any soil type, from sandy to clay. The most important factor is decent drainage, although it handles moist soils well once established.
Water
Requires regular watering to stay lush, especially during the peak summer months. Once the root system is well-established, it is moderately drought-tolerant, though it looks best with consistent moisture.
Common Issues
The most frequent challenge is its aggressive growth habit. If left unchecked, it can quickly overtake other areas of the garden. Plant it in spaces where its spreading nature is an advantage.
Fertilizer
Wedelia is not a heavy feeder. A single application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring is usually enough to maintain vigor and promote constant blooming.
Pruning
Tolerates severe pruning. You can trim it back frequently to keep it within bounds or to encourage fresh, tighter growth.
Pests and Diseases
Highly resistant to pests. Occasionally, it may attract caterpillars or mites under high-stress conditions, but it generally does not require heavy chemical treatments.
Can be susceptible to root rot if planted in soil that remains constantly waterlogged. Maintaining good drainage is the best defense against fungal issues.
Propagation
Incredibly easy to propagate through cuttings or division. Any stem touching the ground will develop roots at the nodes, allowing it to colonize new areas naturally.
Potting / Repotting
If grown in containers, prefer wide pots where it can spread. Due to its rapid growth, you may need to repot or divide the plant annually to prevent it from becoming root-bound.
