Description
Caring for your Tricolor Kalanchoe
Light
Thrives in bright, indirect light and can tolerate some direct sun, which helps enhance its pink and cream variegation. Indoors, place near a south- or west-facing window. Outdoors, morning sun and afternoon shade work best.
Water
Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Water deeply, but infrequently, and avoid letting the plant sit in soggy soil. Reduce watering significantly during winter when growth slows.
Temperature
Prefers warm conditions, ideally between 60°F–85°F (16°C–29°C). Protect from frost, as temperatures below 40°F (4°C) can damage or kill the plant.
Soil
Needs well-draining soil—use a succulent or cactus potting mix, or amend standard potting soil with sand and perlite to improve drainage.
Repotting
Repot every 2–3 years, or when the plant outgrows its container. Choose a slightly larger pot with good drainage. Refresh the soil at the same time to keep the plant healthy.
Feed monthly during the growing season (spring and summer) with a balanced succulent fertilizer diluted to half strength. Skip feeding during the fall and winter.
Pests and Diseases
Generally resistant, but can occasionally attract mealybugs or aphids. Overwatering may cause root rot. Keep the leaves dry and ensure proper air circulation to avoid fungal issues.
Pruning and Maintenance
Prune leggy growth to maintain shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any damaged or dead leaves to keep the plant tidy.
Propagation
Easily propagated from stem or leaf cuttings. Allow cuttings to callus for 1–2 days before planting in well-draining soil. Roots typically form within a few weeks.
